Back to School Checklist

In just a few days it'll be back to school. Parents who already wake up early will wake up even earlier to get kids ready for school. It'll be another year filled with achievements and activities. Let's start the year off right and make sure we have everything we'll need  with a back to school checklist.

It's a good idea to stock up on some essential school supply items so you can anticipate their needs and not find yourself worrying about where to get a 1/4 illustration board they need the next morning. When my children first started school I would pack their bags with all the materials that were requested of us. I later learned that they would need these throughout the year and not on the first day of school.
  • notebooks
  • pens
  • pencils
  • pad paper
  • folders (short & long)
  • bond paper (short & long)
  • illustration board (try to have one of each size)
  • highlighters
  • erasers
  • scissors
  • art/ construction paper
  • index cards (usually 1/4 or 1/8)
  • ruler

On the first day of school they will only need a notebook and a pen since this day is allotted for introductions.

Prepare their daily wear
  • uniforms  (regular & PE)
  • black shoes and sneakers
  • basic wardrobe necessities- sando, shorts, underwear, socks

Lunch time!
  • Food containers (it's best to separate the main dish from the rice especially if it's a meal with soup)
  • water bottle
  • spoons
  • forks
  • napkins
Schedule snacks for the week and try to keep it healthy and filling.

Make sure that they also have the following items:
  • bags (for school books and lunch)
  • sanitizer
  • tissue
  • umbrella or a jacket with a hood

Contact numbers-  Have your children memorize your phone number (both home and mobile). If they have their own cellphones be sure to make your number the very first number that they dial (just add 2 or 3 a's to make this happen).

Immunization shots- This is a requirement for pre-schoolers as it'll be their first day of school. There are booster shots though that your elementary kids have to get as well.

For the Parents:

School schedule for the week

This is important so you can keep track of recesses, lunch times, and the times they have to be at school and when they are let out. Once the kids are let out estimate a number of minutes (or hours if the school is far) so you know when your kids should be home. If you're a working parent this is essential so that you know they are home safe and sound. I used to keep a recurring alarm on my cellphone so that I would know when to call my kids and check on them.

School Service contact numbers

If your children take the school bus make sure to get the driver and back rider's names. Have their contact numbers and home address if possible noted. It's best to have a picture of them as well for your file. Even if a school bus is endorsed by the school it's always better to have this information on hand.

After a long break from school and late nights they might have a hard time getting back to their old schedule of sleeping early and waking up early. Get them back to their routine at least 3 days to a week before school.

Most private schools are strict with hair lengths and grooming. Make sure to get your kids a haircut and have their nails cut and cleaned. Girls should remove nail polish and set aside their accessories for the meantime.

This checklist should get you off to a good start for the year. Remember to spend quality time with them after school. Even if it's only for 30 minutes to catch up on their day with them.

Santacruzan on a Budget

May is the month of Santacruzans and Flores De Mayos. Beautiful girls and women in pretty gowns join the pageant parade  in celebration of festivals where offerings of flowers are made to the Virgin Mary.

My daughter was invited to join the San Benissa Santacruzan and she was honored to do so.

Now these pageant parades can get quite expensive so we had to go about it on a very tight budget. The main items that are needed are a dress, shoes, and tiara. She would also need accessories, and hair and make up  done.

We went to SM North and with the help of a very fashionable friend  we scoured the stores for the right dress. Santacruzans usually require long gowns but luckily the event head allowed short dresses for the children. As we looked around I could see that dresses were going from Php800 to Php2000 which was very much out of my budget. It was in a small makeshift store called Lhasa that we found the perfect dress at only Php600 down from Php 1300. They had temporarily occupied a space near the exit to the Annex Building.

The following weekend we looked for shoes. Manels at SM Fairview was having a close out sale. We found a pair of pink heels a bit on the high side but for only Php200. We found a few tiaras but the most affordable ones were at the SM Dept store near the ballerina section. This tiara only cost  Php149.75.

Hair and make up was provided by the organizers for a minimal fee which was a big help. Her earrings were lent by her aunt.

All in  all it was a great experience for her. She enjoyed the whole to-do and parade. Till next year!

Is PicMonkey the New Picnik?

courtesy of The Daring Librarian
If you've been looking for a replacement to the very useful tool Picnik then look no further. An intended replacement, PicMonkey is almost identical to Picnik with some new features to boast of.

When Picnik announced that they were closing shop they made all their tools available some of which were once only available to paying customers.

So I said my goodbyes to Picnik and searched for a replacement. My only requirements being that it was free and user friendly. I got very lucky and found PicMonkey which didn't even require me to register.

Similar to Picnik it has Basic Edits, Effects, Touch Up, Text, Overlays, Frames, and Textures. So if you're looking to make some touch ups to your shots by air brushing or teeth whitening or creating some dramatic effects then PicMonkey is perfect for you. Best of all it's free!

It's fairly new and they have some things in store such as collages and more. Hopefully their features continue to be free for all users.

Happy editing!

The History of Mother's Day

Appreciation day has always been one of the best days when I was still in school. We would stand in front of class and tell our classmates and teacher what we were appreciative of. We made a real effort to think of what we truly appreciated at the time.

It's nice to know that a day like this exists for mothers, fathers, and grandparents. Mother's Day is just around the corner and I got to wondering how days like these came about and decided to learn it's history.

Mother's Day doesn't have a designated date. It falls on the 2nd Sunday of May. Usually there are surprises of breakfasts in bed and the usual flowers and cards. I think it's safe to say that mothers all around the world would appreciate a day of peace and rest. Of course all gifts and ideas are appreciated but a simple day of rest with no arguments, fights, bickering and chores would be heaven itself.

There are different versions of it's history depending on your part of the world. It's origins can be said to go back as far as Ancient Egyptian times.  In England it started with the celebration of Mary, Jesus' mother in the 1600's. Called Mothering Sunday, it was celebrated on the 4th of Sunday of Lent. In America it was first brought forward by activist Julia Ward Howe. Her efforts to bring peace during the Franco Prussian war led her to make an impassioned plea which was translated into several languages. She promoted Mother's Day for Peace which was celebrated on June 2 and was celebrated every 2nd Sunday of June thereafter. She fought for it to be a recognized official holiday to no avail. Her focus on women's rights became a priority and the celebration of Women for Peace slowly faded.

Anne Marie Reeves Jarvis attempted to establish Mother's Friendship Day. Her drive came from her own experiences. She took care of her ailing mother and when her mother passed away she felt such deep longing for her that she set out to create Mother's Day. Becoming the Founder of Mother's Day, she reached out to established figures in the community to aid in her campaign.

The first observation of Mother's Day was on May 10, 1908 during a church service in West Virginia which was dedicated to her dear departed mother. It was eventually celebrated by the whole of America. In May 1913 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother's Day a national holiday every 2nd Sunday of May.

Today we celebrate the sacrifices, triumphs and dedication that mothers give unconditionally. In such a modern age this holiday aptly represents a mother or mother figure who has cared beyond anyone else and loved with unending depths. Pin It
